ALEXANDER FROOD - ANN SINCLAIR

ALEXANDER FROOD was born in Cambusnethan in 1836. According to the OPR, he was baptised on the 14th of June, 1836. (OPR Ref. 628/3, FR596)

Son of John Frood and Mary McIlquham.

Alexander is at Old Church Cottage, Cambusnethan, on the 1851 census. On the 1861 census he is at Cartside Farm, Carmunnock and at the time of his marriage in 1868 he was living at Drips Farm, Carmunnock. These are just two different names for the same place.

ANN SINCLAIR was born in Bothwell about 1844 or 1845. No entry can be found for her birth in the OPR indexes.

Daughter of Donald Sinclair and Ann Hartford.

Ann is in the village of Chapelhall, Bothwell, on the 1851 census. At the time of her marriage in 1868 she was living at 17 Montgomery Street, Glasgow.

Alexander and Ann were married in Kirkton, Blantyre, on the 10th of December, 1868.

Officiated by Robert Montgomery, Minister of the Free Church, Blantyre.

Alexander and Ann are at Cartside Farm, Cathcart, on the 1871 census and at East End Farm, East Kilbride, on the 1881 and 1891 census. On the 1901 census, Ann is still at East End, but Alexander is at Duntiglennan Farm, Duntocher, in the parish of Old Kilpatrick.

The 1881 census lists Alexander's occupation as Grazer - the LDS transcription released on CD has this as 'Grocer'.

  1. John Frood, born at Cartside of Dripps Farm, Cathcart, on the 22nd of October, 1869. (GROS Ref. 1869, 560, 202)

    The entry in the GROS Index is for John Kerr Frood. There is a note in the margin of the registration information as follows: "See register of corrected entries, Vol. 1, p38 29/12/1869". John married Isabella Johnston Watt, daughter of James Watt, Grain Miller, and Agnes Barr, at The Bath Hotel, Bath Street, Glasgow, on the 25th of June 1896. John was then living at Duntiglennan. They are at 3 Wellshot Cottages, Rutherglen, on the 1901 census They had at least two children. John's occupation is given as Foreman Stableman.

    John emigrated to Australia some years later, and presumably died there.

  2. ANN SINCLAIR FROOD, born at Cartside of Dripps on the 31st of July, 1871. (GROS Ref. 1871, 560,???)

    Married William Dickie, son of James Dickie and Margaret Weir.

  3. Mary McIlquham Frood, born at Cartside on the 4th of February, 1873. (GROS Ref. 1873, 560, 36)

    Mary does not appear to be on the 1881 census. She married Walter Harvie, Potato Merchant, son of Agnes Harvie, at The Established Manse, Duntocher, on the 28th of April 1896. Walter was living at Old Street, Duntocher and Mary was living at Duntiglennan. Mary died at Harvie's Land, Old Street, Duntocher, on the 19th of January 1915. Her middle name is given as 'Meiklem'.

  4. Catherine Frood, born at East End on the 22nd of October, 1874. (GROS Ref. 1874, 643, 112)

    Catherine is with her father at Duntiglennan on the 1901 census. At one time she was employed as a Town Clerk. She never married, and died at Hennybrook(?) Hospital, Alexandria, on the 19th of December 1958. Her usual place of residence was Craddock House, Milton, Dumbarton.

  5. Marion McIlquham Frood, born at East End on the 17th of July, 1877. (GROS Ref. 1877, 643, 80)

    Marion married Joseph Telfer, Shepherd (b. Rothesay, Isle of Bute c.1877) of Gleninnan(?), Tighnabruaich, son of William John Telfer and Ann Brown, at The Manse, East Kilbride, on the 15th of November 1905. She died in the Victoria Hospital Annexe in Rothesay on the 25th of August 1973. Her usual place of residence was Townhead, Rothesay.

  6. Alexander Frood, born at East End on the 20th of November, 1879. (GROS Ref. 1879, 643, 119)

    Alexander married Bethia Macaulay of Hairmyres Farm, daughter of James Macaulay and Marion Johnston, at the Torrance Hotel, East Kilbride, on the 20th of December 1906. Bethia was the grand-daughter of Alexander Johnston and Margaret Dick. Alexander was then living at Dykehead Farm, East Kilbride. Alexander and Bethia later moved down to live at Spurriers Farm in Essex.

  7. Elizabeth Frood, born at East End on the 27th of February, 1882. (GROS Ref. 1882, 643, 19)
    Elizabeth never married. She was employed as a Housekeeper. She died at Erskine Villa, Duntocher, on the 23rd of December 1961.
  8. Walter Frood, born at East End on the 30th of May, 1884. (GROS Ref. 1884, 643, 53)

    Walter is at East End on the 1901 census. His occupation is Millwright. He married Agnes Sinclair, daughter of George Sinclair, Carpenter, and Jane Shearer, at The Manse in East Kilbride on the 25th of December, 1907. Walter was at that time a Carter. Both were then living at Wester Kittochside Farm, East Kilbride. Walter died at West Lodge, Cardross Park, Cardross, on the 28th of July 1953.

  9. Margaret Russell Frood, born at East End on the 16th of January, 1887. (GROS Ref. 1887, 643, 12)

    Margaret married James Smith (b.c.1886) of Overton, Cambuslang, son of John Smith and Helen Munn, at The Manse, Carmunnock, on the 24th of January 1917. Margaret was at that time resident at Kilmailing Road, Cathcart. Margaret was found to be dead on arrival in an ambulance at the County Hospital, Ayr, on the 10th of October 1966. Unusually, no cause of death is given on her death certificate. Her usual place of residence was 30 Bellevue Crescent, Ayr.

Ann died at East End on the 21st of February, 1915.

Alexander died at 6 Kilmailing Road, Glasgow, on the 17 of March, 1918.
