ALEXANDER IMRIE - JANET MILLER

ALEXANDER IMRIE was born in Thornhill, Kincardine, Perthshire in 1795 (Ref. 1851 Census). His eldest son is named James, so this may have been his father's name.

JANET MILLER was born at Touch Farm in the parish of St. Ninian's, Stirlingshire, and baptised on the 3rd of January, 1795. (Transcribed from OPR Ref. 488/4, FR1386)

Daughter of John Miller and Margaret Leckie.

Alexander and Janet were married in Kincardine on the 12th of January, 1823. (Transcribed from OPR Ref. 364/2, FR307)

Alexander and Janet are resident in Norriestown in the parish of Kincardine on the 1841 census. Alexander's occupation is given as 'Farmer'. Norriestown has a total population of about 105 people, mostly Agricultural Labourers, but Alexander is the only resident listed under 'Farmer'.

Alexander and Janet are probably at Birkenshaw Farm, Eastwood, on the 1851 census. Alexander's wife's name is given as 'Margaret', but all the other information seems to tie in with what is known about his family. In addition, at the time of his son Alexander's marriage in 1861 his address is given as 'Birkingshaw, Eastwood', and on the 1851 census, one John Miller from Stirlingshire is present, identified as 'Grandfather'.

Janet is at Auchenback Farm, Neilston, on the 1881 census, living with another son, John (see below).

Children:

  1. James Imrie, born in the parish of Kincardine on the 13th of December, 1823. (Transcribed from OPR Ref. 364/2, FR276)

James never married. He died at Stewartfield Farm, Blantyre, on the 30th of May 1874.

  2. Margaret Leckie Imrie, born in the parish of Kincardine on the 13th of March, 1825. (Transcribed from OPR Ref. 364/2, FR277)

Margaret does not appear to be on the statutory registers of Marriages or Deaths, so it is possible that she may have died between 1851 and 1855.

  3. John Imrie, born in Norriestown on the 2nd of November, 1827. (Transcribed from OPR Ref. 364/2, FR279)

John is head of the family at Auchenback on the 1881 census. He married Jane Clark of Hazelden Mains, Mearns, daughter of Robert Clark and Mary McFarland(?) in the Parish of Mearns on the 12th of June, 1860. They had at least seven children. At one time they were living at Davieland Farm, Neilston. John was at Auchenback Farm, Barrhead, at the time of his brother James' death in 1874; and at Auchenback on the 1881 census. He died at Wraes Cottage, Barrhead, on the 21st of May 1902.

  4. ALEXANDER IMRIE, born in Norriestown on the 6th of December, 1831. (Transcribed from OPR Ref. 364/2, FR283)

Married Janet Howie, daughter of Robert Howie and Isabella Craig.

  5. David Imrie, born in Norriestown on the 15th of July, 1837. (Transcribed from OPR Ref. 364/2, FR289)

David was witness at his brother Alexander's wedding in 1861. He married Barbara Mackie, daughter of David Mackie, Cowfeeder, and Janet Watson, at Crossmyloof on the 13th of June 1865. They had at least seven children. In 1881 he was the dairyman at Regent Park Dairy, Nithsdale Street, Govan. David died at 47 Nithsdale Street on the 29th of November 1909.

  6. James, Margaret and John are not in Norriestown on the 1841 census.

Alexander died some time before his son Alexander's marriage in 1861. No record has been found of his death, so he may have died before 1855 also.

Janet died at Auchenback on the 28th of August, 1882.
