ALEXANDER JOHNSTON - AGNES DICK

ALEXANDER JOHNSTON was born in East Kilbride about 1796.

Son of John Johnston and Agnes Thomson.

AGNES DICK was born in Cambuslang and baptised on the 26th of May, 1807. (OPR Ref. 627/1, FR110)

Daughter of Robert Dick and Agnes Alexander.

Alexander and Agnes were married in June 1827 - OPR entries for East Kilbride on the 3rd (OPR Ref. 643/3, FR790) and for Cambuslang on the 12th (OPR Ref. 627/2, FR349).

Alexander and Agnes are at Chapelside Farm, East Kilbride, on the 1851, 1861 and 1881 census.

Children:

  1. JOHN JOHNSTON, born in East Kilbride about 1828.

    Married Helen Strang, daughter of James Strang and Elizabeth Jamieson.

  2. Alexander Johnston, born in East Kilbride about 1830.
  3. Alexander married Elizabeth Stewart Hall (b. Glasgow c.1834), daughter of John Hall and Elizabeth Buchanan, on the 28th of June 1860 at 430 Argyle Street, Glasgow. At that time he was employed as a Wholesale Grocer. Alexander and Elizabeth had at least six children. They are at Main Street Bank Buildings, Cambuslang, on the 1881 census. His occupation is given as Farm Overseer. Alexander was witness to his brother John's marriage. Alexander died at 98 Brownside Road, Cambuslang, on the 15th of October 1916. His occupation was then Steelwork Stocktaker.

  4. Agnes Johnston, born in East Kilbride about 1833.

    Agnes never married. She died at Chapelside on the 21st of December 1866. Her nephew John Scott was the informant - he was her sister Margaret's son.

  5. Marion Johnston, born in East Kilbride about 1835.

    Marion married James McAulay (b. East Kilbride c.1825) of Hairmyres Farm, East Kilbride at Chapelside on the 13th of June 1861. He was the son of William McAulay and Isabella Napier. They are at Hairmyres on the 1881 census. They had at least ten children, one of whom, Bethia, married Alexander Frood, son of Alexander Frood and Ann Sinclair. Marion died at Hairmyres on the 20th of June 1909.

  6. Archibald Johnston, born in East Kilbride about 1837.

    Archibald is at Chapelside on the 1851 census but is not in Lanarkshire in 1861.

  7. Bethia Johnston, born at Chapelside about 1839.

    Bethia is at Chapelside on the 1881 census. She never married. She died at Basket Farm on the 4th of November 1922. Her nephew John Scott was the informant - he was her sister Margaret's son.

  8. Margaret Johnston, born in East Kilbride about 1841.

    Margaret married William Scott (b. East Kilbride c.1835) of Basket Farm, son of John Scott and Janet Struthers(?) at Chapelside on the 1st of December 1865. Margaret, widowed, is at Basket Farm on the 1881 census, with two children and her mother-in-law. Her age is given as 32, which is incorrect - she should be 39 or 40. Margaret died at Basket on the 29th of December 1906.

  9. James Johnston, born in East Kilbride about 1843.

    James is possibly in Glasgow with his brother Alexander on the 1861 census.

  10. Thomas Johnston, born in East Kilbride about 1845.

    Thomas seems to have been more commonly known as Thomson; he is 'Thomas' on the 1851 census but thereafter he appears as 'Thomson'. He was the informant on his sister Agnes' death in 1866. He married Agnes Kergan (b. New Monkland c.1846), daughter of Robert Kergan, Coal Miner, and Isabella Russell at Home Farm, Hamilton, on the 5th of June 1874. Thomas was then a Farm Grieve, residing at Basket Farm. On the 1881 census they are living at Colebrook Street in Cambuslang and have three children. Agnes' widowed mother is also with them. Thomas is now working as a Weigher at a Steel Works.

  11. Mary Johnston, born at Chapelside about 1849.

    Mary is at Chapelside on the 1881 census. She was witness to her sister Margaret's marriage in 1865.

Alexander died at Chapelside on the 5th of October, 1883.

Agnes died at Chapelside on the 25th of May, 1889.
