JOHN JOHNSTON - HELEN STRANG

JOHN JOHNSTON was born in East Kilbride about 1827.

Son of Alexander Johnston and Agnes Dick.

John is at Chapelside Farm, East Kilbride, on the 1851 census and at the time of his marriage.

HELEN STRANG was born in Eaglesham about 1840.

Daughter of James Strang and Elizabeth Jamieson.

Helen is at Bonnyton Farm, Eaglesham, on the 1841 census and at Bowhouse Farm, Carmunnock, at the time of her marriage.

John and Helen were married at Bowhouse on the 12th of February, 1861.

John's occupation is given as Master Grocer on his son Alexander's birth certificate (this is in November 1861). At this time they were probably living in the Govan area of Glasgow. They then moved to Hobsland Farm in Monkton, Ayrshire.

John and Helen are at Roseholm Farm, Dreghorn, on the 1881 census and at Chapelside on the 1891 and 1901 census. Several of their children are at the neighbouring Nook Farm on the 1891 census.

  1. Alexander Johnston, born at 22 Caledonia Road, Glasgow, on the 27th of November, 1861. (GROS Ref. 1861, 644/10, 1935)

    Alexander is at Nook Farm on the 1891 and 1901 census, and was his usual place of residence at the time of his death. He never married, and died in the Victoria Infirmary in Glasgow on the 20th of May 1903.

  2. Elizabeth Jamieson Johnston, born at Hobsland on the 4th of October, 1863. (GROS Ref. 1863, 606, 60)

    There is an Elizabeth Jamieson working as a Dairymaid at South Dean Farm, Kilmarnock, on the 1881 census. She married John(?) McAulay (b. East Kilbride c.1842) of East Rodgerton Farm, East Kilbride, son of Thomas McAulay and Mary Scott, at Nook on the 8th of December 1886. They are at East Rodgerton on the 1891 census.

  3. Agnes Dick Johnston, born at Hobsland on the 17th of November, 1865. (GROS Ref. 1865, 606, 56)

    Agnes is at Nook Farm on the 1891 census and at Chapelside on the 1901 census. She never married, and died at Chapelside on the 6th of December 1943.

  4. Helen Johnston, born at Roseholm on the 23rd of December, 1867. (GROS Ref. 1868, 589, 6)

    According to the registration information, Helen is 20 minutes older than her twin sister Marion. She married John Gilmour, Joiner (b. East Kilbride c.1860) of Nerston, son of Daniel Gilmour and Mary Reid, at Nook on the 26th of June 1889. Her middle initial is given as 'S', presumably for 'Strang'. Helen died at Chapelside on the 29th of January 1943.

  5. Marion Johnston, born at Roseholm on the 23rd of December, 1867. (GROS Ref. 1868, 589, 7)

    Marion is at Chapelside on the 1891 census. She married John Semple (b. Avondale c.1855) of Threestanes Farm, Avondale, son of Thomas Semple and Mary Bell, at Chapelside on the 21st of December 1893.

  6. James Johnston, born at Roseholm on the 20th of January, 1869. (GROS Ref. 1869, 589, 8)

    James is at Chapelside on the 1891 census. His occupation is Joiner. He never married, and died at Chapelside on the 6th of December 1938.

  7. John Johnston, born at Roseholm either on the 13th or 30th of December, 1870. (GROS Ref. 1871, 589, 4)

    John is at Chapelside on the 1901 census. He never married and died at Chapelside on the 16th of June 1952.

  8. Jessie Strang Johnston, born at Roseholm on the 13th of January, 1873. (GROS Ref. 1873, 589, 11)
  9. Registered under Johnstone. Jessie married John Hamilton (b. Glassford c.1861) of Berryhill Farm, Glassford, son of John Hamilton and Euphemia Lennox, at Chapelside on the 22nd of June 1897. She died at Snabe Farm, Avondale, on the 1st of August 1934. Her usual place of residence was East Nerston.

  10. MARGARET JOHNSTON, born at Roseholm on the 12th of April, 1874. (GROS Ref. 1874, 589, 63)

    Margaret is at Nook Farm on the 1891 and 1901 census. Married Matthew Semple, son of John Semple and Agnes Dickie.

  11. William Strang Johnston, born at Roseholm on the 14th of August, 1876. (GROS Ref. 1876, 589, 128)

    William is at Nook Farm on the 1891 and 1901 census. His occupation in 1901 was a Clerk in Bonded Store, but he later returned to farming. William never married. He died at Chapelside on the 21st of April 1958.

  12. Mary Johnston, born at Roseholm on the 7th of December, 1880. (GROS Ref. 1880, 589, 154)

    The 1881 census has Mary born in Stewarton. She is at Chapelside on the 1901 census. Mary married James Caldwell Young (b. East Kilbride c.1873) of Hawthorn Cottage, Braehead, East Kilbride, a Gum Manufacturer, son of James Young and Margaret Caldwell, at Chapelside on the 17th of July 1905. James was later a manager in a textile factory. Mary died in premature childbirth in the Victoria Infirmary in Glasgow on the 19th of December 1919. Her usual place of residence was Hawthorn Cottage, Braehead, Thornton Hall, Glasgow.

  13. Bethia Johnston, born at Roseholm on the 12th of July, 1882. (GROS Ref. 1882, 589, 121)
  14. Bethia is at Chapelside on the 1891 and 1901 census. She married Thomas C. Bryson (b.c.1885) of Nerston Farm, East Kilbride, son of Andrew Bryson and Helen Cochrane, at Chapelside on the 2nd of November 1921. Bethia died at 1 Claremont Terrace, Glasgow, on the 9th of July 1937. Her usual place of residence is given as Turnlaw Farm, Cambuslang.

John died at Chapelside on the 18th of September, 1906.

Helen died at Chapelside on the 15th of July, 1916.
