Andrew and Jane were married in Avondale on the 23rd March, 1793. (Transcribed from OPR Ref. 621/2, FR367)

Note: the 'Hall' referred to below is possibly Hall of Carnduff.

  1. John Semple, born in Hall, Avondale, on the 9th of March 1795. (Transcribed from OPR Ref. 621/2, FR304)
John was married to Margaret Black (b. Avondale c.1800), daughter of John Black and Elizabeth Stewart. Both are in Avondale on the 1851 and 1861 census, and probably at Hall Farm in 1855. Margaret died at Hall of Carnduff on the 25th of June 1866. John died at Roundhill Farm on the 4th of July 1869.
  2. William Semple, born in Hall, Avondale, on the 30th of January 1797. (Transcribed from OPR Ref. 621/2, FR307)
William was married to Margaret Young (b. Avondale c.1808). They were at Roundhill Farm, Avondale, in 1855. Andrew died at Mid Linbank on the 1st of January 1873. Margaret is at Mid Linbank, Avondale, on the 1881 census.
  3. Andrew Semple, born in Hall, Avondale, on the 3rd of April 1799. (Transcribed from OPR Ref. 621/2, FR310)
Andrew is not in Avondale in either the 1851 or the 1861 census.
  4. James Semple, born in Hall, Avondale, on the 22nd of November 1800. (Transcribed from OPR Ref. 621/2, FR313)
James was married to Agnes Young (b. Avondale 7th November 1808), daughter of William Young and Agnes Lawson, and then to Marion Semple (b. Avondale 23rd of March 1808), daughter of John Semple and Margaret Stewart. He had children by both wives. James died at Shawton, Glassford, on the 3rd of February 1866.
  5. Janet Semple, born in Hall, Avondale, on the 12th of April, 1808. (Transcribed from OPR Ref. 621/2, FR323)
  6. Matthew Semple, born in Hall, Avondale, on the 1st of June, 1811. (Transcribed from OPR Ref. 621/2, FR328)

Matthew married Margaret Watt, daughter of Thomas Watt and Margaret Craig.

  7. Jean Semple, born in Hall, Avondale, on the 1st of June, 1814. (Transcribed from OPR Ref. 621/2, FR334)
  8. John's daughter Mary married Matthew's son Andrew in 1870. James' son Andrew married Matthew's daughter Jane in 1859. William's son William married John's daughter Margaret in 1855. All very confusing! Contrary to popular expectation, none of the children from these marriages suffer from any disability, according to the 1881 census.

There is a Thomas Semple in the OPR index fiche, born in Avondale 30/1/1797 to Andrew Semple/Jean. All the other children above have the full names of the father and mother next to them, so until further confirmation can be found it can't be definite that he is a son of this Andrew and Jane. The timescales make it difficult to fit another birth in between John and William. If he is a twin of William it would be expected that the parents' names would be recorded identically (note - the actual microfilm has no such entry).
