ROBERT STRUTHERS - SARAH WILSON

ROBERT STRUTHERS was born at Middlerow Farm, Avondale, on the 2nd of March 1789 and baptised on the 8th. (Transcribed from OPR 621/1, FR291)

Son of Robert Struthers and Jean Wilson.

SARAH WILSON was born in Avondale on the 22nd of October, 1803. (OPR Ref. 621/2, FR???)

Daughter of Gavin Wilson and Mary Cochran.

Robert and Sarah were married in Avondale on the 13th of January, 1825. (Transcribed from OPR)

Robert and Sarah are at Side Farm, Avondale, on the 1841, 1851 and 1861 census.

  1. Mary Struthers, born in Syde of Glengavel, Avondale, on the 13th of January, 1826. (Transcribed from OPR Ref. 621/4, FR546)

    Mary is Housekeeper to her younger brother John at Leaburn in East Kilbride on the 1881 census. She never married, and died at Leaburn on the 28th of December, 1882.

  3. Gavin Struthers, born in Avondale on the 28th of May, 1829. (Transcribed from OPR Ref. 621/4, FR556)

    Gavin is at Side on the 1841 and 1861 census. In 1851 he was possibly working for the Craig family at Bankend Farm, Avondale. His nephew would eventually marry into this family (see Gavin Struthers and Isabella Craig). Gavin never married, and died at Side on the 8th of May 1865, age 35.

    James is at Side on the 1841 and 1851 census. He married Janet Young (b. Galston c.1837), daughter of John Young and Janet Cameron, at Allanton Mill, Galston, on the 24th of June, 1859. At that time James was resident at Crofthead, Galston, employed as a Farm Servant. James and Janet had at least five children. They are in Carluke parish on the 1861 census and at 12 Polworth Street, Galston, on the 1881 census. James was an Agricultural Labourer in 1881, but latterly worked as a Thatcher according to the 1891 census. He died at Polworth Street on the 2nd of February, 1902. Janet had previously passed away on the 24th of November, 1900. One son, also named James, served in the Cameron Highlanders and was killed at the Battle of Loos in the First World War.

    Andrew is possibly in Carluke parish with his elder brother James on the 1861 census. He is at Dornel Farm, Auchinleck, on the 1881 census, along with his younger brother David. He married late in life, to Jane Bell (b. Glassford c.1855), daughter of George Bell and Margaret Semple at 48 Main Street, Newton, Ayr, on the 27th of November 1895. At that time he was at Springhill Farm, Sorn. Andrew died at 29 Kirk Street, Strathaven, on the 5th of May 1909. His brother Alexander was the informant.

  9. William married Janet Prentice (b. East Kilbride c.1842) of West End Farm, East Kilbride, daughter of Thomas Prentice and Marion Finnie, on the 28th of December 1871 (GROS Ref. 1871, 643, 19). They are at Hill of Auchronie Farm, Kinellar, Aberdeenshire on the 1881 census, and at Doonholm Farm, Alloway, Ayrshire on the 1891 census. William died at Crossgates Farm, Stewarton, Ayrshire, on the 14th of April 1914.

    John is a Joiner at Leaburn in East Kilbride on the 1881 census. His eldest sister Mary was then his housekeeper. John married Jean Wilson (b. East Kilbride c.1865), daughter of Andrew Wilson and Margaret Dickie, at Curlingmyre Farm, East Kilbride, on the 27th of November, 1883. Jean was then 18 years old, 26 years younger than John! They had at least one child. John died at Longhouse, Craigie, Ayrshire, on the 21st of July 1921; his occupation is given as Farmer.

    Michael is a Cartwright at Auldhouse, East Kilbride, on the 1881 census. He married Ann Semple (b. Avondale c.1850), daughter of Matthew Semple and Margaret Watt, on the 8th of June, 1869. Their son Robert, born at Auldhouse on the 18th of February 1872, is at Ladehead Farm, Lesmahagow, on the 1891 census, working for his maternal grandfather. They also had at least five other children. Michael died at High Cleughearn, East Kilbride, on the 4th of April 1904; his occupation is given as Farmer.

    Alexander is at Whiteholm of Dornel Farm, Auchinleck, on the 1881 census. He married Margaret Law (b. Avondale c.1853) daughter of James Law, Railway Surfaceman, and Jane Rarity(?) in Balgreen, Strathaven, on the 18th of December 1874. They had at least three children. Alexander died at Dornel on the 18th of May 1913, age 69.

    Jean is at Side on the 1861 census. She never married, and died at Leaburn (at her brother John's residence?) on the 17th of January 1873, age 27.

  14. David Struthers, born in Avondale about 1848. (Derived from transcription of 1851 census)

    David married Margaret Gilcrest Bryson (b. Auchinleck c.1825), daughter of William Bryson and Jane Boyd, at Auchmillan, Mauchline, on the 17th of June 1879, and they had at least one child. They are at Dornel Farm, Auchinleck, on the 1881 census, along with David's elder brother Andrew. Margaret died at Waterhead Farm, New Cumnock, on the 12th of October 1911. David later married again (at the age of 77!), to Jane Drummond Anton (b. Sorn c.1875), daughter of James Anton, Joiner, and Margaret Watson, at 121 Garthland Drive, Glasgow, on the 31st of December 1925. At that time he was resident at Leafield Farm, Mauchline. Jane was resident at 23 Tay Crescent, Glasgow. Her occupation is given as Fruit Saleswoman. David died at Collisdene, Strathaven, on the 19th of March 1937, age 88. His usual residence is given as 53 Lethame Road, Strathaven.

  15. Thomas Struthers, born in Avondale about 1848. (Derived from transcription of 1851 census)

    Thomas was an apprentice Joiner. He appears to have suffered from problems with his spine, which led to paraplegia, and he died on the 8th of January 1869 when only 20 years old. He was living in Burnfoot at the time. His brother Robert was the informant.

Robert died at Kirk Street, Strathaven, on the 5th of October, 1866.

Sarah died at Burnfoot, Avondale, on the 18th of January, 1873.
